Being 138 years old can be pretty young. If you don’t believe
it, ask Colorado.
That is the age our beloved Colorado will celebrate August 1st,
2014, and the party is ON.
Colorado is definitely a special state with character, history
and tons of creativity of its own. For example:
• Colorado was the first state in the
union to grant the right to vote to women through a popular election in 1893.
• Colorado is the only state in history, to turn down
the Olympics. In 1976 the Winter Olympics were planned to be held in Denver.
62% of all state voters chose, at almost the last minute, not to host the
Olympics; because of the cost, pollution and population boom it would have on
the State of Colorado, and the city of Denver. As everyone knows Olympics are
bad business for hosting cities, Am I right Sochi?
• Colorado’s geography is unique. The state owns the
world's largest flat-top mountain in Grand Mesa, contains 75% of the land area
of the U.S. with an altitude over 10,000 feet, and has in Denver the largest
city park system in the nation with 205 parks in city limits and 20,000 Acres
of parks in the nearby mountains.
But
not everything is so serious,
• Colorado has more microbreweries per capita than
any other state and we are investing "green
taxes” in helping programs aimed at keeping kids way from the leaves. That makes Colorado FUN.
taxes” in helping programs aimed at keeping kids way from the leaves. That makes Colorado FUN.
Of
course, as any young state, Colorado’s history is far from perfect. Errors have
been made, despicable acts committed to our own people, especially minorities.
However, I like to think we have learned through this painful process, and we
are on our way to become the amazing state we have the potential to be.
So
LET’S CELEBRATE!!!
I
came up with 3 fun activities for the weekend. History, Music and Arts in our
“ruddy” colored earth, ever sunny state.
1-
HISTORY COLORADO MUSEUM
Could
there be out there a better place to celebrate Colorado? I don’t think so.
In
this place you can learn about Ute, Amache, Lincoln Hills, and Mesa Verde, just
to name a few. By the way, if those words sounds like Chinese to you, it is
time to discover their meaning. Have fun playing with time machines, cooking
and learning about how Colorado became Colorado. Enjoy American Indian dancers,
Taiko drummers, adobe brick making, panning for gold, and much more!
Colorado
Day celebrations at the History Colorado Center Friday, August 1 and
Saturday, August 2 from 10a.m. to 5p.m. FREE ADMISSION.
2-
THE CRESTED BUTTE ARTS
FESTIVAL
In this 42nd version, the Festival is taking place
from August 1 to 3, 2014. Approximately 175 artists from around the world
will line Historic Elk Avenue nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountains.
This
is one of Colorado’s Top 5 fine art and fine craft shows. The Festival offers a
juried art exhibition, culinary demonstrations, an auction, kids' activities,
live entertainment, and more!
Sat–Sun: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
3- THE
TELLURIDE JAZZ FESTIVAL (New
Orleans celebration style)
Celebrating Colorado’s day with a southern flare is not out of
question. The 37 year old Telluride Jazz Festival takes place on two outdoor stages during the day, the
main stage in Telluride’s legendary Town Park, and free stage at the Wilkinson
Public Library. Add to the fun a free wine and spirit tasting featured on
Friday and Saturday; and Sunday’s Main Street parade and tribute to New
Orleans. Don’t miss the amazing Poncho Sanchez & His Latin Jazz band, this
version Guest of Honor and Grammy award winners Snarky Puppy.
EXTRA FYI:
For 2014, Colorado day is Monday August 4, 2014. All Colorado
State Parks will be FREE!
